Founded on November 12, 1922 at Butler University located in
Indianapolis, Indiana, Sigma Gamma Rho has become an international
service organization comprised of women from every profession. Sigma
Gamma Rho offers its members opportunities to develop their unique
talents through leadership training and involvement in sorority
activities. It is through these activities that the sorority creates
an atmosphere where friendships and professional contacts are
developed. These introductions often lead to bonds that last a
lifetime.
In a time when education for African-Americans was difficult to
attain, the seven founders of Sigma Gamma Rho became educators. They
believed that the self-respect, knowledge and discipline gained
through study would help individuals to recognize their duty and
responsibility to society. Thus, Sigma Gamma Rho was founded on the
precepts of education and community service and continues to promote
and encourage high scholastic achievment.
Mad Hops, ltd. Pres./CEO, Herb Baldwin, Jr. maintains a similar
philosophy. "I’m very proud to be a part of the Founders Week
Celebration" he said, "I love what Sigma Gamma Rho represents and it’s
strong commitment to its surrounding community. The sorority has a
proud history of offering service wherever chapters exist and I
consider it an honor to share my life experiences with the group."
