Mad Hops, ltd. Pres./CEO Advocates
Columbus, Ohio November 14,2002
- Mad Hops, ltd.
Pres./CEO, Herb Baldwin, Jr. was a featured guest on Columbus Radio
station Power 107.5FM. Baldwin participated in an on-air
telephone interview conducted by personalities from the station's
morning show - "Paul Strong and the Power Morning Crew",
advocating National Diabetes Month.
In August of this year, Baldwin was appointed to the American
Diabetes Association's (A.D.A.) Leadership Council as Chairman of its
annual "Tour de Cure" event. Tour de Cure, the association's annual
bicycle riding fundraising event, takes place in early June 2003.
Baldwin's role as a council member has been to assist A.D.A. in
recruiting volunteers, raising money for research and reaching
people.
"I think this is an exciting opportunity for Mad Hops, ltd. to be
involved with," said Baldwin at the time of his appointment." I feel
blessed and honored to lend whatever I can to further the cause of the
American Diabetes Association in its fight against this life-changing
disease."
The focus of the interview did not only highlight advocacy but the
affects and prevalence of diabetes within the African-American
community, in particular.
For example:
- African Americans are 2 times more likely to have diabetes than
non-Hispanic whites.
- 25% of African Americans between the ages of 65 and 74 have
diabetes.
- One in four African American women over 55 years of age has
diabetes.
- Approximately 2.8 million (or 13%) of all African Americans have
diabetes.
Diabetes is the fifth deadliest disease in the United States
and it has no cure.
During the interview Baldwin discussed the importance of how one
should maintain a healthy lifestyle and visit his/her doctor,
regularly, to prevent or control diabetes. Eating well-balanced,
nutritional meals and having a regular training regimen, such as a
daily walk, can also help decrease the chance of developing the
complications of diabetes.
In May of this year, Baldwin’s company, Mad Hops, ltd. hosted its
1st annual event – a 5-on-5 Basketball Tournament - to
raise awareness of the threat of diabetes. The "BigDawg" Basketball
tournament also raised money for diabetes research (20% of event
proceeds) and ADA assisted in giving free diabetic screenings to
patrons in attendance. Power 107.5FM was the Title sponsor of the
event, as well. The Columbus Post was the official print sponsor.
The on-air phone interview took place during the radio show’s 8
o’clock hour.
